The First Earth Day
My university of approximately 30,000 students, proclaimed a whole week in which all schools of study were to suspend normal classes and instead, to focus on how that particular school could contribute to the well-being of the planet. The end of that week would culminate on the newly proclaimed Earth Day with a day-long celebration on the “green”. Every school would display and demonstrate their ideas for Earth regeneration and maintenance.
The excitement and energy levels were high — full of potential and possibilities. All who participated were changed forever.
We astounded ourselves and each other with the incredible ideas and projects that were birthed in that flurry of creativity and brainstorming that took place that week. We discovered that everything was solvable if we simply changed our viewpoint to the perspective from which solutions could be seen. That simple act of looking for solutions, no matter how crazy, rather than focusing on the problem, brought forth miraculous changes in our thinking, our values and ultimately, our lives.
Buckminster Fuller was the new hero in the school of architecture, which influenced their decision to build a 40 foot geodesic dome on the green. It was the centerpiece of the event, with conversations on time, energy and material efficiencies as well as structural integrity.
There were exhibits on soil, ocean and air regeneration and care, waste disposal, energy resources, production and delivery, manufacturing, transportation; you name it, some group was covering it. Sustainable design — a given — for everything! The EE department built a small electric car, another Bucky influence. The future was bright and we knew it!
Currently there is a renewed awareness regarding the health of our planet and the future of life on it. Fortunately, there is a new generation who is concerned and capable, so once again, the future is full of possibilities!
